How Can You Support Your Child’s Language Development at Home?

Self Talk:

Talk, describe, and comment on whatever you are doing.

Example:

  • “ I am eating”
  • “Time to Eat”

Use 1-2 more words than your child.

Parallel Talk:

Talk about what your child is doing, seeing, eating, or touching.

Example:

– “You kicked the ball

Narrate your child’s actions.

Extension:

Adding more information to extend on what your child has said.

Example:

Child: “Car go”
Adult: “The blue car is going fast”

Recasting:

Repeat what your child has said in a different or more complex way.

Example:

Child: “ Want Juice”

Adult: “I want more juice please.”

Imitation:

Repeat exactly what your child has said including babbling, sounds, and words

Expansion:

Repeat what your child has said, but add to the sentence to make it grammatically correct.

Example:

Child: “Car Red”

Adult: “The car is red”
